Descriptif
This class is a cultural history of "classical" music of the 19th - 21st centuries as it intersects with the concepts of “art,” “pop,” and “avant-garde.” There are guided listenings from the piano, video excerpts, text extracts, group commentary, discussion, and debate around pieces from Beethoven to the Beatles.
Objectifs pédagogiques
By the end of the semester, you will have:
- Learned about specific cultural concepts, and how these impact our understanding of art and music (and culture more generally).
- Explored ways that art and music intersect with other fields.
- Practiced discussing and debating cultural themes.
