Programme détaillé
First of all, we will dive into the natural rhythm of the English language, the way it pulses like a heartbeat. As an introductory exercise, students will each write a few lines of their own in the most famous metre in English, so beloved of writers for Shakespeare to Yeats - iambic pentameter.
The second step along our path towards exploring our written creativity in English will be to explore metaphors and similes. Again, each student will have the opportunity to craft his or her own variation on this theme.
Students will then be ready to begin dreaming up and writing a short story. This is the central project for the course, and students will work on it over the semester. In order to assist students in this endeavour, the instructor will ask them to hand in a first draft after several weeks of classes, upon which he will provide feedback, both linguistic and stylistic. The students will hand in a final version of this project at the end of the course. Although the other tasks will count too, and participation in class will be rewarded in your mark, the short story is the main piece of coursework.
During the remaining sessions, the teacher will aim to enrich students' ability to get creative. We will discuss writing tips from great authors, and consider the importance of character, time and other key insights. The instructor will also familiarise students with George Orwell's timeless advice for how to write well in English. Moreover, a class in creative writing in English wouldn't be complete without also taking a brief look at the art of song writing.
To complete students' appreciation of creative writing in English, the teacher, who has many years experience as a journalist, will share some thoughts about creative writing in the world of journalism.
