Descriptif

Will you be part of the team that represents ENSTA during the league competitions of the French Debating Association (FDA)? Will you and your team rise to the challenge of getting as far in the competition as possible, possibly even winning it? Are you someone who is dedicated, passionate, and ready to work with your coach and others in order to improve your public speaking skills, hone your rhetoric and master the art of debating?

Objectifs pédagogiques

By the end of the semester, you will have:

  • practised your public speaking skills in a formal context.
  • worked in teams to produce ideas and create group cohesion.
  • trained your nerves and overcome fears to speak in front of others.
  • tested your competitive spirit in a friendly manner.

Skills focus

This class will principally focus on oral skills - both speaking and listening, as one cannot reply convincingly to one's interlocutor or opponent without listening carefully to what they have said. Reading skills will be practised during preparatory research and writing skills in the preparation of speeches.

    Programme détaillé

    Activities

    • exercises to train your voice, diction and body language.
    • activities to make you understand better rhetoric and the presentation of ideas in a spoken context.
    • look at and attempt to imitate examples of great speakers of note.
    • use humour to disarm our opponents and win over our judges.

    Assessment

    Assessment in the class will be based on contributions in the class and your improvement in public speaking.

    Success in the FDA competition will have no impact on participants’ final grade.
