Langues - AN214 : The Rhetoric of Professional Self-Promotion

Domaine > Langues vivantes.

Descriptif

This course is about how to put your best foot forward as you seek to secure that international job role of your dreams or to promote that innovative business idea with which you plan to conquer the world! Over the semester you will have ample opportunity to work on your CV, both with input from the instructor and by comparing and contrasting it with that of your peers. Moreover, you will produce a cover letter in English that will serve as a template for all of your subsequent job-hunting endeavours on the international scene.

You will also grapple rigorously and extensively with a comprehensive range of interview questions ranging from old favourites such as “what are your strengths and weaknesses?” to the surprising and challenging questions that top firms like Google tend to ask these days: “how lucky are you and why?”.

All along the way, the teacher will illustrate this process with reference to the timeless principles of rhetoric – of getting what you want – that have served the great masters of persuasion from Aristotle right up to the present day.

You will learn very practical language in this course. For instance, you will gain a firm grasp of the differences in register, style and convention between a letter and an email. You will also learn to master essential elements of English-language style such as the most appropriate linking words for moving from one subject to another in a letter or an email.

Your instructor will assess you over the semester by taking into account the quality of your written work, your overall participation and level, and also your success in the interactive moments of the course, in which he will expect you to engage seriously and enthusiastically with your peers as you try out different concepts.

By the end of the semester you should be ready to promote yourself professionally on the international scene and make sure your true potential shines through!

After the end of this course, an external consultant will assess the CV and interview simulations you will have worked on over the semester.
